Let me start at the beginning:
In 1940 a compound called Resveratrol was discovered in a plant called White Hellebore, then later in 1963 it was identified in the roots of Polygonum cuspidatum, a plant used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine.
No-one paid any attention to resveratrol until 1992 when 60 Minutes did it's first story on the French Paradox. Morley Safer explained to us that Resveratrol was the ingredient in red wine that gave it the mysterious ability to protect the French from heart disease and early death, even though French ate diets that were wine-soaked and high in saturated fats.
Red wine sales skyrocketed, and people were excited by the possibility that drinking red wine could improve your healh. But not much else was known about resveratrol. That is until 1997.
In 1997 a researcher named Meishiang Jang headed a study that revealed Resveratrol was a powerful antioxidant that prevented cancers from forming in the experiments his group did on mice. He concluded in his paper that Resveratrol "merits investigation as a potential cancer chemopreventive agent in humans".
Since Jang's paper was published, scientific interest in resveratrol has exploded. Fewer than fifty scientific papers (in total) devoted to resveratrol research were published as of 1997. However, in 2008 alone, 519 scientific papers were published, all documenting experiments testing the effects of Resveratrol.
Then in June 2006 two researchers, Joseph Bauer and David Sinclair, had their paper Therapeutic Potential Of Resveratrol, published in the scientific journal Nature. In this paper, which was a review of Resveratrol research to that date, Bauer and Sinclair reported the effects Resveratrol had on cancer, heart disease, inflammation, arthritis, stroke - brain damage, and aging.

The conclusion of Bauer and Sinclair's paper states, "In mammals, there is growing evidence that resveratrol can prevent or delay the onset of cancer, heart disease, ischaemic and chemically induced injuries, diabetes, pathological inflammation and viral infection. These effects are observed despite extremely low bioavailability and rapid clearance from the circulation."
Later in November 2006, Bauer and Sinclair had their research paper, Resveratrol improves health and survival of mice on a high-calorie diet, published, again in Nature. In the abstract of this paper it stated clearly, "Resveratrol produces changes associated with longer lifespan, including increased insulin sensitivity ... resveratrol opposed the effects of the high-calorie diet ... and points to new approaches for treating obesity-related disorders and diseases of aging."
About 18 months later, 60 Minutes revisited it's French Paradox story, this time starring David Sinclair. Morley Safer explained to us in this story that, Resveratrol activates a normally inactive gene, the Sirtuin gene, that triggers a survival mechanism that extends life. Sinclair clarified this further, saying to Safer of Resveratrol, "what we're talking about is activating the body's natural genetic defenses against diseases."
The most memorable part of this story was the video of the two mice running on the treadmill. Both mice were fed a high fat diet for twelve weeks. When placed on the treadmill the mouse that had been fed high concentrations of resveratrol ran twice as far. The fat mice fed Resveratrol also lived 20% longer.
The story ends with Sinclair telling us that aging is a set of diseases, and Resveratrol through its activation of the Sirtuin gene slows down the aging process by delaying the onset of those diseases or preventing them altogether. Diseases like diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, all of the diseases typically associated with aging.
